The Rwanda Community Abroad (RCA) is a Unit at MINAFFET that deals on a daily basis with Rwandans living abroad. The department is also in charge of providing different services in line with legalization of different documents to Rwandans, both inside and outside Rwanda.  

Rwanda realized the important role Diaspora can play in the areas of financial, virtual and physical transfers, image building, good governance, trade and investments.

In addition, the Rwandan Diaspora can act as a catalyst in bringing innovation, and the best practices in different areas of public and private sectors.

Currently, there are up to 68 RCA Associations across the globe: Africa (32), Europe (22), Asia (8), America (4), and Oceania (2).

Below are different gatherings and platforms where RCA members are involved in the spirit of contributing to the well-being of their homeland.

  • Rwanda Day

Rwanda Day is a sort of gathering where the Rwandan community abroad gets to understand its role in shaping the country’s future. Discussions held during ‘Rwanda Day’ focus on the country’s development goals, business environment and opportunities available for those wanting to be part of a country on the move.

Key facts about Rwanda Day:

  • The first Rwanda Day was held in 2010 in Brussels – Belgium
  • Rwanda Day has been held in Brussels, Chicago, Paris, Boston, London, Toronto, Atlanta, Dallas, Amsterdam, San Francisco and Ghent
  • Since Rwanda Day was launched, over 30,000 people have attended the events
  • Rwanda Day gathers Rwandans living abroad, friends of Rwanda, the President and other senior leaders from the public and private sectors

Itorero Urunana rw’Urungano

Itorero normally takes place in December and the lead is the Ministry of Youth. The role of MINAFFET in this itorero is to mobilize members of the RCA youth to participate in the Itorero.

Rwanda Diaspora Global Network (RDGN)

Rwanda Diaspora Global Network (RDGN) has been in place for the last 10 years as an umbrella association of Rwanda communities abroad. In 2017, an interim committee was elected.

Umushyikirano

Umushyikirano (National Dialogue Council) is one of the Rwandan home grown initiative which offers a forum where His Excellency the President, along with national leaders and citizens debate issues relating to the state of the nation, the state of local government and national unity. Representatives of Rwandans Living Abroad participate in Umushyikirano and RCA Unit mobilise them. The Dialogue usually takes place in the second week of December.
