Rwanda and Burundi meet in an effort to normalize bilateral relations
On 20 October 2020, Hon. Dr. Vincent Biruta, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, met with his Burundian counterpart Hon. Amb. Albert Shingiro at the Nemba/Gasenyi border on the Rwandan side.
The objective of this working visit initiated by Bujumbura, was to discuss the status of bilateral relations and agree on modalities to normalize them.
Rwanda and Burundi have historic ties but both countries have faced challenges over the past 5 years. It was agreed that there is need to pursue their engagements in order to find lasting solutions.
The Burundian Minister gave a letter addressed to the Government of Rwanda by the Government of Burundi to Hon. Dr. Vincent Biruta who also gave him a letter addressed to the Government of Burundi by the Government of Rwanda.
A reciprocal visit of Hon. Dr. Vincent Biruta to Burundi will be organized at a date to be agreed by both parties.
